Crafting the Unique Culture of the Sessians

The Sessian people have a long and painful past. History, lineage, wars, famine, culture, religion. The Sessian are complex people. Their world-building has been years in the making.

So what makes them unique?

Well, let’s start with the basics.

Government

They have three distinct royal houses:

  • The Lamorse of Lamora: Their emblem is a proud feathered and antlered dragon of pastel hues.
  • The Port of Portolis: Their emblem is a ferocious garlinx, a quilled lion in purple tones.
  • The Hysel of Heizmark: Their emblem is the faesh, a colourful seahorse with long flowing feathers and fins.

But an anti-royal sentiment gave way to the Shulk, led by the Great Leader Hexil.

Development

Forced to live alongside foreign enemies, the Sessians built up two distinct districts: Lamora & Shull. These areas were led by opposing beliefs. Lamora hid away, keeping as far from the outside world as possible; whereas Shull embraced the very nature of humanity, choosing to live quietly within enemy territory.

Arguments could be made from both sides as to which was a better tactic, but the reasoning was the same: Keep safe. Don’t make waves.

With unique abilities and vrils, the Sessians were able to flourish on both sides, building housing, infrastructure, roads, and museums. Sessian history is etched into the very fabric of the world around them.

Vrils

Vrils are the societal hierarchy of the Sessian culture. Divided into different classes, your position in life comes down to your own abilities.

Astertiff, for example, is considered one of, if not the most, prestigious Vril classes, whereas Selrene vrils are seen as lower class and eerie.

Despite vril classes being hereditary, the vrils themselves can greatly vary. Families never know if—and when—great-great-great-grandpa Joe’s unique Vril will show back up again.

And while some argue that this is biased, classist, and ableist, very little has been done to fix the system.

Arrival

An important question remains.

How did they end up in this foreign land?

That’s a story yet to come. Learn more in “Sessanites: Book 1, Meet Me Tonight
